I just finished re-reading this book - again - and was even more impressed this time around, probably because I haven't read any books in this series for a while. I've always thought my favorites in the series were Dragonbound and The Oracle's Kiss. I'm going to have to add this one to the list of best in the series.

Both Tess and Xavier, the heroine and the hero in this story, are somewhat understated people. The heroine was on the run when she went to a Vampyre's Ball to audition for a spot serving in a vampyre's home - any vampyre would do because she was in great danger. Her audition blew me away, as she followed a young lady who swanked across the state in the nude wearing 4 inch heels, while giving her educational achievements. Her statement? “My looks are entirely forgettable, and I’m smarter than almost anyone here.” I found that Tess reminded me a little of Pia in Dragon Bound, in her attitude and courage.

Xavier was also understated but we see the true man revealed throughout the book and he's very impressive - and flashy when he needs to be. One thing I liked the book was how well the secondary characters were fleshed out. There were several secondary characters I would love to see more of.

Night Honor Elder Races Book 7 edition by Thea Harrison Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I'm a huge fan of the Elder Races, but this is the first book that I've read that didn't include the Wyrs and to be honest, at first I wasn't sure exactly how I felt about it. The more I got into the politics and dynamics of the Vampyre community though, I stopped worrying. It's not that I didn't miss the Wyrs and the characters that drew me into this series. It was more because I found a whole other group of characters that I wanted to get to know better.

Speaking of getting to know someone better, Xavier wasn't an easy guy to get close to... not that Tess had any intention of trying. She was there keep herself hidden and hopefully protected. Plus, she was totally repulsed by vampyres in general. Not exactly a normal start for a romance, but it was also kind of an interesting twist in the genre, for me anyway.

Even though Xavier was more than a little private and at times withdrawn, it was obvious that there was more to him than what he showed people on the surface. Tess slowly began to notice that he may not be as bad as she once thought, but she still wasn't willing to give everything she asked for.

There were a lot of characters introduced in Night's Honor. I loved the dynamic between Xavier and his attendants. Tess tried his patience, but he still respected her. How he treated those who served him and stood beside him was part of the reason why he gained my respect, and eventually Tess's as well.

I'm kind of hoping that we see more of Xavier and Tess in the books that follow in the Elder Races. That's entirely possible, since the next book in the series features a couple of my least favorite vampyres from Night's Honor. I've already started reading Midnight's Kiss and I'm kinda warming up to Julian, but Thea Harrison has her work cut out for her to get me to get me to really care about him. (I have no doubt she's up to the task ;) )
This would have gotten more stars from me because I enjoyed it very much were it not for the egregious and unforgivable gratuitous cliffhanger. Completely unnecessary and manipulative. Clearly, the so-called last chapter is the first chapter in the next book in the series. It could have been included as a sneak look but instead pretty much ruined this book for me and I don't trust this author. Does every book in this series end on a cliffhanger?

Having gotten that off my chest, I really enjoyed it. Like a world where vampires are civilized, cultured people, not ravening monsters. Like a world where all these paranormals co-exist with humanity.

Although this says it is #7 in the series, I had no trouble reading it as a standalone and if it weren't for that nasty cliffhanger, might read more in the series.
My favorite of the series so far. I'll admit to picking and choosing depending on whether the characters grabbed me, and I knew immediately that these two main characters would. I'm definitely more fond of the thinking man than the hulking dudebro as a male lead, and this hit the sweet spot there. As always, great pacing from Harrison and maintains the tension well throughout, and I dearly loved that the female MC ends up holding her own with her wits. That's always more interesting than brute firepower.
A few pages into this book, I thought this isn't long enough.

And I was right. Without spoiling things, rather than doing character development, Harrison just has the male lead undergo a complete 180 in the matter of a few pages--to the point of outright changing personalities. It was so jarring while I was reading it that I had to read back a few pages to make sure I hadn't accidentally missed something.

But no. It's just that abrupt. The romance here is tepid at best, completely out of left field at worst. I'm reminded of a quote about treating people like Barbie dolls and smashing them together until they reproduce. This... is basically that. It was extremely bizarre, too, because Ms. Harrison is actually pretty good at the sexual tension stuff. You know, she does it for a living? But this book may as well have been written by a different author.
